The Daily Telegraph: How Much Gold Is There in the World?

LONDON, 19 October 2012 - Comment and analysis from world-leading precious metals provider BullionVault today features extensively in a report by The Telegraph, the UK's fifth best-selling daily newspaper.

With a circulation of more than half-a-million copies, outpacing all but the UK's tabloid press, The Telegraph's Questor columnist, Garry White, reports on a new claim that the total above-ground stockpile of physical gold is almost 10% smaller than the best estimate currently says.

The Telegraph explains:

"'This is a provocative survey of the secondary sources,' says Adrian Ash, head of research at Bullion Vault, which holds £1.1bn of gold for clients. [He] does not believe it genuinely matters because most of the gold that is held above ground never comes up for sale. Gold is 'stored' in jewellery, artifacts in museums and, of course, bullion hoarding.

"As the authors note," Adrian goes on, "there's been little study of the primary data since the high Gold Standard ended a century ago. Hopefully this report will help spur new historical research into mine and mint output, the weight of gold in museum artifacts and the prevalence of gold in local economies and foreign trade."
