Logging in to BullionVault - in detail

A BullionVault security policy is that we do not implement automatic login available on many web-sites. Automatic login requires an encrypted version of your password to be left on your computer as a cookie. Thereafter anyone who uses that computer can log in as you.

On BullionVault you must log in manually.

The BullionVault system automatically logs out an unused session after a time.

The procedure

Step 1. less detail	Do you really want to log in? A number of BullionVault facilities are freely available even when you are not logged in. You can check your holding without logging in (provided you can remember your nickname) You can monitor the market's order boards without logging in. You can monitor gold price charts without logging in. For many visits this may be all you want to do. The primary reason for logging in is because you want to buy or sell gold. Wherever possible you should try to avoid logging in to important web-based services on computers you do not fully trust (for example in internet cafes). When the computer you use is not physically secure some hacker may have put on it a program which records your key-strokes and sends them to him, which makes stealing passwords too easy. BullionVault has substantial further safeguards for those whose login details are compromised and your money (if not your privacy) should be perfectly safe even then, but it is not wise to take an unnecessary risk on an unknown computer.
Step 2. less detail	Go to the main home screen at www.BullionVault.com
Step 3. less detail	Press the LOGIN button. You should see the login screen. You can go there directly - and not via the front page - by using this URL https://www.BullionVault.com/secure/login.do . It is a good idea to bookmark your login screen on your home computer as it saves typing and increases safety. Some internet security scams are designed to work by copying a legitimate login page but hosting it on a mistyped domain name. For example if you typed "www.BullionVolt.com" it is possible that someone might be able to copy the normal log-in page of BullionVault and you'd innocently type in your user-id and password, which they'd then know. Avoid this with a bookmark/favourite.
Step 4. less detail	You will be asked for your secure Username and Password, which you specified at your registration (or have subsequently changed). Press the SUBMIT button to continue the login procedure.
Step 5. less detail	You will then be asked for 3 random characters from the memorable word you provided on your registration. You should select the correct characters using the drop down selectors. Then press the SUBMIT button to complete your log in.

What happens next ?

The system remembers where you were when you last logged out and takes you straight there. You can confirm you are logged in because the menu bar is different. The LOGOUT button appears, and the ACCOUNT and HISTORY buttons are enabled.
You can now use all the site facilities.
If your security details did not match, you may retry entering the correct details. Eventually your account will be suspended if too many failed attempts are made to log into your account.
