Fabrication charge

When you buy gold at the 'spot' price it is generally for settlement in a standard size 12.4 kg ingot known as a 'good delivery bar'.

A non standard size usually attracts a fabrication charge which pays for the cost of making non-standard and relatively illiquid bars.

On BullionVault you can buy any number of whole grams, but the bars stay immobilised in good delivery form in the vault.  There is no fabrication charge for smaller quantities.
